  6. INTRODUCTION:
  7.      Welcome to AmoebaWars!, an exciting online application for your Red
  8.      Ryder Host, WWIV, or Mansion bulletin board system.  In AmoebaWars,
  9.      your users can compete against others in propagating electronic
  10.      amoebas by placing them on a 10x50 grid.  This application is designed
  11.      to make maintenance easy, automatic, and be as easy on the sysop as
  12.      possible.

  14. INSTALLATION:
  15.      The steps to installation are simple.  Follow the steps outlined below:
  16.        •  Using the New Folder menu choice in the Finder, or an equivalent,
  17.           create a folder for the AmoebaWars support files, which include
  18.           AmoebaWars Help, AmoebaWars Welcome, and (if you are a registered
  19.           user) AmoebaWars Register.
  20.        •  Copy the AmoebaWars application to the same folder as your
  21.           bulletin board.
  22.        •  In your host bbs application, set up a menu choice where you want
  23.           to run an external application, in this case AmoebaWars.  In Red
  24.           Ryder Host this is done with MenuEdit (for more in-detail help,
  25.           please refer to your Host manual).  In Mansion, this is done
  26.           through the built-in menu editor.  In the WWIV system, pressing
  27.           the proper key while waiting for a call will bring you to the
  28.           external application setup.
  29.        •  Run your bulletin board, and launch AmoebaWars.  This will allow
  30.           you to enter the correct pathnames via a dialog box, as well as
  31.           giving you the option of a log file or no log file (marking when
  32.           people have entered or exited AmoebaWars).  Setup and running the
  33.           application work ONLY if you launch from your bulletin board
  34.           application, otherwise AmoebaWars does not find the "Launch BBS"
  35.           or corresponding file (depending on which bbs program you are
  36.           using) that it requires to work correctly.  If you need to re-
  37.           configure the AmoebaWars data after moving your bbs application or
  38.           the folders, it is easiest to open your System Folder and drag
  39.           the "AmoebaWars Options" file to the trash.
  40.        •  Quit from AmoebaWars, and your bulletin board will now be able to
  41.           run the external door. OTHER INFO:
  42.      If you are running under multifinder, select the "No Local Echo" in the
  43.      sysop menus, and the window will not appear.

  45.      The program creates a "AmoebaWars Bulletin" text file which you can use
  46.      as a routinely updated text file for display in Red Ryder Host, WWIV,
  47.      or Mansion as a standard text file.  It exists in the AmoebaWars path 
  48.      you have designated.  The other files that AmoebaWars creates are:
  49.      AmoebaWars Scores; AmoebaWars Options; AmoebaWars Register; AmoebaWars
  50.      Data; AmoebaWars Help; AmoebaWars Welcome; and AmoebaWars Board.

  52.      This version adds the option of entering an alias for use in the game.
  53.      Users are prompted when they first enter to type in an alias, which
  54.      can be up to 32 characters.

  56.      A maximum of 15 people can play AmoebaWars at a time.  There is a
  57.      B)rowse option which allows users to simply keep up-to-date on the game
  58.      or see what the game is like through entry into the door.

  60.      You MUST destroy the AmoebaWars Data and AmoebaWars Board files if you
  61.      are running any other version of AmoebaWars.  The added alias feature
  62.      makes the old files outdated.  If you REALLY need to have the old files
  63.      converted, please let me know and I'll make a conversion program.

  65. BUG FIX AND ADDITION HISTORY:
  66.      03/15/89 Bug fixed which tried to sublaunch WWIV under MultiFinder--
  67.               even through it was running under the normal Finder.  This
  68.               would cause a system bomb or crash when you exited WWIV to
  69.               the Finder for system maintenance, etc.
  70.      03/15/89 Alias option added to user interface, in response to Mansion
  71.               BBS Sysops' comments.
  72.      04/14/89 Finally! Found the data warping routines!  This should be it,
  73.               and now you can stop yelling at me...
  74.      06/26/89 This is an attempted version to fix WWIV incompatibility
  75.               problems and bombs.
  76.      12/27/91 Patched code to work under System 7.
  77.      07/12/92 Added Second Sight direct-LaunchSS option in dialogs.
  78.               Also fixed refusal to recognize Register files problem.

  80. SHAREWARE FEES:
  81.      As a reminder, THIS IS SHAREWARE.  I know how you don't like to spend
  82.      too much money running an expensive phone line, board software, and
  83.      occupying a mac all day, but I consider bulletin board sysops to be of
  84.      a higher nature than most users.  Which means (if you haven't already)
  85.      you will find it in your hearts to send me (Benjamin Kuo, write that
  86.      name on the check, please), a lousy $15 for which you will receive a
  87.      disk in the mail with the latest version.

  89.      The author reserves all rights to the program.  Local
  90.      bulletin boards may distribute this program with the documentation, in
  91.      StuffIt format, freely, providing that they do not gain any renumeration
  92.      besides the operating costs.  This program may not be distributed with any
  93.      commercial software without the author's written permission.  User groups 
  94.      are free to distribute the program in monthly disks and to include the
  95.      program on any CD-ROM (such as BMUG's PD-ROM) or public domain library,
  96.      as long as there is no charge beyond costs of media.  Public domain 
  97.      distribution companies, including EDUCOMP, PD•EXCHANGE, and so-called
  98.      "National User Groups" MAY NOT DISTRIBUTE or SELL this program in any way,
  99.      without the express written permission of the author.
